🔋 The Science Behind Active Charge Limiting
A typical smartphone charges up to 100% and then keeps the battery in that very high state (around 4.35 volts) until the user disconnects. The battery is protected from thermal runaway by its internal circuitry, but the measures taken happen at extreme values, not optimized for long battery life.
Why All-Night Charging is Bad
Holding a 100% charge for many hours induces voltage- and heat-related stress and damages the internal lithium lattice at a molecular level. Limiting charge below 100% or releasing it once topped up has hugely beneficial effects.
An optimized charging process can take a normal phone battery from 250 cycles to more than 1000 before degradation.
Warm + Fully Charged = Dead Battery
A battery above 30°C (86°F) is elevated temperature. For most Li-ion, voltage above 4.10V/cell is high voltage. Exposing the battery to high temperature while at full charge for extended time can be more stressful than cycling.
Cycles Don't Tell the Whole Story
The damage each cycle does depends on depth of discharge, time of charge, and temperature. Five 40-60% cycles don't do the same harm as one 0-100% cycle then keeping it fully charged.

The Science
Lithium-ion batteries degrade fastest when held at high voltage for extended periods. When your phone reaches 100% and stays plugged in overnight, it maintains a voltage of approximately 4.35V per cell — the maximum stress point for lithium chemistry.
What is Hysteresis?
Hysteresis is a control engineering technique that prevents rapid on/off switching. Instead of cutting power at exactly 100% and restarting immediately, Chargie waits until the battery drops to 95% before resuming charge. This creates a gentle "breathing" pattern rather than constant trickle charging.
Why It Matters
